    Masterclass Storytelling Techniques

    Learn how to build a story people understand, remember and pass on.

    A good story doesn't happen by accident. It needs structure, tension, recognition and a clear message. In the Storytelling Techniques masterclass, Jan Suiskens shows how to strengthen business stories using techniques from film, advertising, marketing and corporate communication.

    Participants learn how to turn information into a story — not by dressing it up, but by sharpening the core: who is the protagonist, what's at stake, where's the change, and why should anyone listen?

    Introduction

    From information to story

    Most organisations have plenty to talk about: projects, clients, products, people, innovations, results. Yet the message often gets stuck in loose facts, jargon or generic claims.

    Storytelling brings structure to all of that. It makes a message more human, more concrete and far easier to remember.

    In this masterclass, participants learn how to apply storytelling techniques to business communication — in presentations, sales conversations, video, campaigns, websites, client cases, internal communication and employer branding.

    The goal isn't to make stories prettier than they are. The goal is to make the value that's already there visible, understandable and convincing.

    What will you learn?

    Practical techniques that make stories stronger

    The masterclass unpacks the building blocks of a strong story. Jan shows how stories work, why some messages stick, and how to apply storytelling inside an organisation.

    Module 1

    The core of a strong story

    Every good story starts with a clear core

    A lot of communication gets overcrowded because organisations try to say everything at once, which leaves the message fragmented. In this module, participants learn how to find the core of a story.

    What we cover:

    • where a story really starts;
    • how to separate what matters from what doesn't;
    • why a story needs one clear direction;
    • how to keep a message from becoming too generic;
    • how to move from scattered information to one central idea.
    Outcome: Participants get faster at spotting the core of a story — and at spotting what is just noise.

    Module 2

    The protagonist and the perspective

    A story gets stronger once it's clear who it's about

    In business communication, the story usually revolves around the company itself. But the audience normally cares about something else: the client, the user, the employee, or the market that is changing. Jan shows how perspective works and why choosing the right protagonist instantly strengthens a story.

    What we cover:

    • who the protagonist of a business story can be;
    • why the client often deserves the spotlight more than the company;
    • how to make stories more human without overplaying emotion;
    • how perspective shapes tone, content and persuasive power;
    • how to make technical or complex subjects easier to grasp.
    Outcome: Participants learn to build stories from the perspective of the audience, client or user.

    Module 3

    Conflict, tension and change

    Without change there is no story

    A story only becomes interesting when something is at stake. That doesn't have to be dramatic: in business storytelling, tension can sit in a problem, a challenge, a choice, a shift or an ambition. Jan shows how to add tension to business communication without it feeling forced.

    What we cover:

    • why problems and challenges make a story stronger;
    • how to create tension without sensationalism;
    • how to make the change visible;
    • how to show what is different before and after a solution;
    • how to give a story more direction and urgency.
    Outcome: Participants learn to make business stories more compelling by putting the change front and centre.

    Module 4

    Structure and build-up

    A strong story has a logical arc

    Many stories lose their power because they're built the wrong way round: they open too broadly, reach the point too late, or end without a clear message. Jan shows how to structure a story so the audience comes along.

    What we cover:

    • how to open a story;
    • how to pace the information;
    • how to work with a beginning, middle and end;
    • how to build towards a clear conclusion;
    • how to apply storytelling in both short and long formats;
    • how to adapt a story for a presentation, a video or written copy.
    Outcome: Participants leave with practical structures they can use to build better stories themselves.

    Module 5

    Language, imagery and recognition

    People remember images, examples and concrete language

    Strong storytelling isn't only about structure — it's also about how you say things. Abstract language weakens a story; concrete images, examples and details make it credible. In this module, Jan shows how language and imagery work together.

    What we cover:

    • how to make abstract concepts concrete;
    • why examples usually beat claims;
    • how to create recognition in your audience;
    • how to translate jargon into plain language;
    • how to use images, metaphors and scenes;
    • how to make a message shorter and sharper.
    Outcome: Participants learn to make their story more concrete, more human and easier to remember.

    Who is it for?

    For anyone who wants to tell business stories better

    The masterclass is built for professionals who want to get their message across more sharply, more convincingly and more human.

    A good fit for:

    • executives and management;
    • marketing teams;
    • communications teams;
    • sales teams;
    • HR and recruitment teams;
    • project leads;
    • entrepreneurs;
    • spokespeople;
    • trainers and consultants;
    • teams that regularly present, pitch or create content.

    The session is especially valuable for organisations with deep expertise in-house that isn't always landing with their audience.

    In practice

    Using storytelling in your day-to-day communication

    The techniques from the masterclass apply directly across many forms of business communication.

    For example:

    • client cases;
    • sales presentations;
    • pitches;
    • corporate video;
    • social content;
    • websites;
    • newsletters;
    • internal communication;
    • employer branding;
    • change communication;
    • presentations at events;
    • personal stories from employees or leadership.

    So participants don't just learn what storytelling is — they learn how to put it to work.

    What you take away

    A firmer grip on your story

    After the masterclass, participants have a clear picture of how to build and improve their stories.

    Participants will be able to:

    • find the core of a story faster;
    • turn information into a clear narrative;
    • choose the right protagonist and angle;
    • make tension and change visible;
    • make complex content easier to understand;
    • structure stories more effectively;
    • communicate in a more concrete, vivid way;
    • apply storytelling in copy, presentations, video and sales.

    The masterclass builds awareness and practical skill in equal measure. Afterwards, participants look at communication differently: less broadcasting, more story, relevance and recognition.

    Possible exercises

    Experience for yourself how storytelling works

    Depending on the length of the session, participants can also get hands-on.

    Example exercises:

    • rewriting a factual message as a story;
    • pinning down the core of a client case;
    • building a story with a beginning, middle and end;
    • choosing the protagonist and the perspective;
    • translating a complex message into plain language;
    • sharpening a short pitch or introduction;
    • adapting a story for video or presentation.

    That way storytelling isn't just explained — it's practised.
